2018 Contest Winners Announced!

FICTION WINNER

Laura Picklesimer — “Boiling Point”

Laura Picklesimer earned her MFA in Fiction from Cal State Long Beach and her bachelor’s degree from UCLA’s creative writing program. Her stories have been featured in Riprap, the Santa Ana River Review, the Pomona Valley Review and the California Current Writers Series, among other publications. She lives in Los Angeles and teaches English and writing at Chaffey College.

“…“Boiling Point” never becomes just a story about ideas, divorced from an individual’s thoughts and desires. In her clear and visceral sentences that evoke a world both like and unlike our own, Picklesimer places you completely in the narrator’s haunting, singular journey.” — Fiction Judge Rachel Khong

POETRY WINNER

Katharine Ogle — Seeing the Big Dog and others

Katharine Ogle is currently a Provost Fellow at the University of California PhD program in Literature and Creative Writing. Her poems and critical work have been published in Quarterly West, Pleiades, Poetry Northwest, Meridian, and others.

“The voice of the speaker seems both like a voice I know very well and yet the voice of an utterly distinct, wildly individual consciousness[…]This sensibility, this vital imagination, teaches me without lecturing, revises without destroying, praises without hagiography, distances without resort to simplistic hatreds. These are unforgettable poems, vibrant and irreducible. To read them is good luck, and is to drink of nectar.” Poetry Judge Jesse Nathan
